FIRST PICTURES OF ERUPTION FROM RABAUL BY AEROPLANES
Kathleen Bignell became known to the locals as the "Heroine of Rabaul"
and for her efforts was awarded the BEM. After escaping Rabaul prior to the
Japanese
invasion, she returned looking for her son Ted, subsequently captured she
was transported to Japan
with the nurses from Rabaul in 1942.
